In September 2004, Hurricane Jeanne struck, causing extensive damage to the building.

Undeterred by this setback, the museum underwent a massive rebuilding effort starting in April 2005. The renovation resulted in a remarkable transformation, culminating in a grand re-opening in August 2005.
