Frostproof 1-9
Nestled in Polk County, Florida, the city of Frostproof boasts a fascinating history that belies its unusual name. Founded in the late 19th century, this small town has weathered challenges and changes to become a unique part of Florida’s cultural landscape.
Early Settlement and Naming
The area now known as Frostproof was first settled in 1850 as a fort called Fort Clinch, named after the nearby Lake Clinch. However, this initial settlement was short-lived, abandoned just months after its establishment. It wasn’t until the 1880s that permanent settlers, attracted by the abundant hunting and fishing opportunities, began to populate the area.
Originally named Keystone City, the town faced an identity crisis when postal authorities rejected the name due to its similarity to Keystone Heights in North Florida. This led to a series of name changes that culminated in the adoption of “Frostproof” – a name that would prove both a blessing and a curse. Next article.
The Frostproof Name Controversy
The story behind the Frostproof name is a subject of local legend and historical debate. According to traditional accounts, Joseph Washington Carson suggested the name Frostproof as a marketing ploy to attract potential landowners, implying that the town would never experience crop-damaging frosts. However, recent research by local historian Bea Reifeis has uncovered documents that challenge this widely accepted narrative.
Reifeis’s book, “Frostproof Treasures: The History of Frostproof, Florida to 1910,” presents evidence that while Carson did indeed suggest the name, the process of its adoption was more complex than previously thought. The book also reveals that following a significant freeze in 1894-95, there was a push to change the name from Frostproof due to its misleading nature.
Growth and Development
Despite the irony of its name, Frostproof persevered and grew. The town received its first rail service in 1912, marking a significant milestone in its development. Today, Frostproof is home to several notable institutions, including the Latt Maxcy Corporation and Ben Hill Griffin, Inc., both members of the agricultural cooperative Florida’s Natural.
Cultural Heritage
Frostproof’s rich history is reflected in its preserved landmarks. The Historic Ramon Theater, built in 1925, continues to host live music, entertainment, and murder mystery events. The Historic Atlantic Coast Line Train Depot, constructed in 1912, has been renovated and is now promoted as “Polk County’s Newest Old Attraction”.
Today, Frostproof stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of early Florida settlers. Its unique name and intriguing history continue to fascinate residents and visitors alike, making it a distinctive gem in the heart of the Sunshine State.
