Frostproof 1-7

Nestled in the heart of Polk County, Florida, Frostproof is a small but charming city with a rich history and a close-knit community. Founded in 1850, this quaint town has grown into a vibrant hub of agriculture, culture, and natural beauty.

Historical Roots

Originally established as Fort Clinch, named after Seminole War commander Duncan Lamont Clinch, the settlement was abandoned shortly after its founding. It wasn’t until the 1880s that permanent settlers, attracted by the abundant hunting and fishing opportunities, began to call the area home.

The city’s unique name, “Frostproof,” was actually a clever marketing ploy. It was chosen to convince potential landowners that the area was immune to frosts that could damage citrus crops. Ironically, just a few years after adopting this name, the Great Freeze of 1895 devastated much of the local citrus industry.

Economic Pillars

Today, Frostproof is home to key players in the agricultural sector, including the Latt Maxcy Corporation and Ben Hill Griffin, Inc., both members of the Florida’s Natural cooperative. The citrus industry continues to play a significant role in the local economy, despite historical setbacks. Read another article.

Art and culture are integral to Frostproof’s identity. The Historic Ramon Theater, built in 1925, still operates today, hosting live music, entertainment, and murder mystery events. Another point of interest is the renovated Historic Atlantic Coast Line Train Depot, built in 1912, now known as “Polk County’s Newest Old Attraction”.

The median age is 49.8 years, with a diverse racial composition: 70.84% White, 11.85% Other race, 11.68% Two or more races, and smaller percentages of Black or African American, Native American, and Asian residents.

Frostproof is uniquely positioned between two lakes: Lake Clinch and Lake Reedy. Despite its name, the city experiences sub-freezing temperatures during 65% of its winters, falling within the humid subtropical climate zone.
