Frostproof, a city located in Polk County, Florida, is steeped in history and culture, making it a unique and vibrant community in the southern part of the county. The city’s history dates back to its establishment in 1850 as a fort named Fort Clinch, which was abandoned shortly after. By the 1880s, Frostproof began to attract its first permanent settlers, drawn to the area’s abundant hunting and fishing opportunities. The town’s name, Frostproof, stemmed from a marketing ploy to assure potential landowners that the town would never experience frost, a factor that could harm the large citrus-driven economy. However, a frost during The Great Freeze of 1895 killed most of the citrus in Frostproof, challenging the town’s name. Prior to being named Frostproof, the town was known as Keystone City, but confusion with another city led to the adoption of the name Frostproof.
The city is home to significant cultural and historical landmarks, including the Historic Ramon Theater, built in 1925, which continues to host live music, entertainment, and murder mystery events. Frostproof is also home to the Historic Atlantic Coast Line Train Depot, built in 1912, which has been renovated and is now known as Polk County’s Newest Old Attraction. The city boasts a total area of 2.5 square miles, situated within the Central Florida Highlands area of the Atlantic coastal plain, characterized by flatland interspersed with gently rolling hills. The city is located in the humid subtropical zone, as designated by the Köppen climate classification.
The transportation infrastructure in Frostproof includes State Road 17, known as the Scenic Highway, leading north to Lake Wales, as well as US 27, a four-lane divided highway running north–south just west of town, and US 98, which runs west from US 27. The Historic Downtown District, located between Lake Clinch and Lake Reedy on Wall Street, adds to the city’s historic charm.
With a rich and diverse population, Frostproof is a melting pot of cultures, with a racial composition that includes 70.84% White, 11.85% from other races, 11.68% of two or more races, 3.73% Black or African American, 1.32% Native American, and 0.58% Asian. The city’s residents have strong ties to the United States, with 92.6% being native-born, and a significant portion born in Florida.
